This is something I feel very passionate about because I am a big fan of the Keto Diet. For those of you that is not familiar with the keto diet.  The Keto diet is a high fat, adequate-protein, low carbohydrate diet. It involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat. The reduction in carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat puts your body in a state of ketosis. I wanted to look into what is the best keto products for weight loss.  It is important that when you are on this diet you stick to keto friendly foods otherwise you will not receive the desired results.

The keto diet as I have explained in a previous article is a low-carbohydrate diet.  There are many health benefits of the keto diet and quite a number of studies has been done over the last few years.  I wanted to explore the keto diet further and see what health benefits has been proven.

Aids in weight loss

t takes more work to turn fat into energy than turning carbohydrates into energy. Because of this reason the keto diet helps with weight loss. The diet is high in protein and does not leave you hungry like most other diets. In a meta-analysis of 13 different randomized trials 5 outcomes revealed a significant weight loss from a ketogenic diet.

Reduces Acne

There are different causes for acne and one might be diet and blood sugar. Eating a diet high in processed and refined carbohydrates can alter gut bacteria and cause dramatic blood sugar fluctuations, both of which has an influence on your skin. By decreasing carbohydrate intake it is no surprise that you will see a reduction in acne.

May reduce risk of cancer

A study found that the ketogenic diet may be a suitable complimentary treatment to chemotherapy and radiation in people with cancer. This is due to the fact that it would cause more oxidative stress in cancer cells than in normal cells. Other theories suggests that because the keto diet reduces high blood sugar, it could also reduce insulin complications which may be associated with cancer.

What do you eat?


Salmon is a healthy food for your brain because it’s rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Sardines and mackerel have high amounts at fat too. Salmon is packed with potassium, selenium, B vitamins and zero carbohydrates.  Shrimp and some forms of crab have no carbohydrates either. Eat at least two servings of seafood per week for a healthy consumption of vitamins, minerals and omega 3.

Low-carb vegetables

 We can and should all eat more vegetables. They are healthy for you and in general there are a couple of vegetables that you can add to your keto diet.  One cup of raw spinach has less than a gram of carbohydrates. Cooked Brussels sprouts have nearly 8 grams of carbohydrates. Both are healthy and contain antioxidants that protect against cellular damage.  Steer clear of the starchy vegetables like beets, yams and potatoes.


There are dozens of kinds of cheese. They are all low in carbohydrates and high in saturated fat. 1 ounce or 28 grams of cheddar cheese equals 1 gram of carbohydrates and 7 grams of protein. This provides 20% of your recommended daily intake of calcium as well. Cheese may help reduce the loss of muscle mass and strength. Don’t forget that cottage cheese is also perfect for the ketogenic diet because it’s high in fat but low in carbohydrates.


Avocados is extremely healthy and they are packed with potassium and other essential vitamins and minerals. Avocados help with lowering LDL cholesterol and increase good HDL cholesterol.

Chicken and red meat:

Meat and Chicken are staple foods for anyone on the keto diet. They are rich in Vitamin B, potassium, selenium, zinc and other minerals and contain zero carbohydrates. Red meat and chicken are also very high in protein. Preserve your muscle and strength by consuming high-quality protein on a low carb diet. If possible people should choose free range meat because it contains omega-3 fats, conjugated linoleic acids and antioxidants that grain fed meet does not contain.


Eggs are as versatile as they are healthy. It is a perfect Keto food because 1 egg has less than 1 gram of carbs but nearly 6 grams of protein. They help maintaining healthy blood sugar levels and positively impact your overall hormone production.  The great thing about this protein filled food is that it is also inexpensive. Eggs also contains Choline which is an important nutrient that most people don’t get enough of.

Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil is a great option for jumpstarting the process of ketosis. It contains unique ingredients like (MCT’s) medium chain triglycerides. The liver absorbs the fats in coconut oil directly and converts them into ketones, that rapid source of energy that can promote weight loss. The main fatty acid in coconut oil is lauric acid, which can help increase the levels of ketone in people with brain disorders, nervous system ailments and Alzheimer’s disease.

Plain Greek Yogurt

Plain Yogurt is a diary product people can incorporate into a ketogenic diet. It contains a small amount of net carbs every 5 ounces of plain yogurt contains 5 grams of carbohydrates and 11 grams of protein. Eating yogurt can promote that feeling of fullness that promotes the feeling of fullness.


Eating a handful of nuts now and then can lower the risk of depression, cancer, and chronic disease. Because they are high in fibre nuts also promote the feeling of fullness which means by eating them you might consume less calories per day.  In 1 ounce Brazil nuts and pecan nuts both have just 1 gram of net carbs. Macadamia nuts and walnuts have only 2 grams of net carbs, and almonds have three. Pistachios and cashews contain 5 to 8 grams respectively.


Seeds are similar to nuts they are great sources of healthy fats paired with low carbohydrates. Seeds have even fewer net carbs than nuts. Flaxseeds have zero net carbs as they are completely fibre. Chia seeds has 1 gram of carbs while sesame seeds have 3 and pumpkin seeds have 4.  As long as they contain less than 8 grams of net carbs per ounce seeds are keto friendly.


There are not many fruits included on the keto diet because they are high in carbohydrates. Berries are low in net carbs and they are high in fibre. They are loaded with antioxidants which helps with inflammation. Blackberries have the lowest net carbs at just 5 in a 2.5 ounce serving. Strawberries and raspberries both have 6 grams of net carbs and blueberries more than 12.

Olive oil

Olive oil is keto friendly. It is a super fat source that has zero carbohydrates. The ingredient is best used for low heat cooking or adding to foods that are already cooked because it is not as stable as a saturated fat at higher temperatures. Olive oil has a high content of oleic acid, a fat that can help reduce the risk of heart disease.

Unsweetened Coffee and Tea

Coffee and tea are carb free beverages that will be suitable on the keto diet. Caffeine can boost the metabolism; improve alertness, physical performance and overall mood. Drinking tea and coffee in moderation can even prevent the risk of diabetes. Avoid sweet flavourings, which contain a lot of carbohydrates. Some heavy cream is acceptable but any light variations use non-fat milk. We love having coffee when fasting days .

Dark chocolate

On the Keto diet it is perfectly fine to have dark chocolate which contains antioxidants and flavanols that fight free radicals. It may help with the health of the arteries and may lower your blood pressure. Dark chocolate can also help lower the risk of heart disease. As mentioned many times before read the packaging. Dark chocolate that contains at least 70% cocoa solids is suitable to maintain ketosis. A 1 ounce serving of unsweetened dark chocolate that is 100 percent cocoa has just 3 grams of net carbs. If it is 70 percent cocoa solids, that number shoots up to 10 grams of net carbohydrates.
